My Story Discover
Gillian is a non-binary/trans multimedia artist working with a range of approaches from oil painting to mural work to live performance. The thread connecting all of their work is the exploration of resistance and liberation in the context of community. As a queer/trans person this comes from lived experience, and as a white/housed/able-bodied person on occupied Cherokee territory, this comes from standing in solidarity, stepping back to listen, and trying to use visual language to celebrate the stories and experiences that other community members have been gracious enough to share with them. Without this community context, without the exchange of ideas and action in the work of liberation and creation, or without accountability in mutual support, this work would not be able to exist. With this in mind, Gillian believes strongly in the power of creativity to spark critical discussion, and builds their praxis around the concept of bringing form to liberatory ideas and movements through creative collaboration.
